Treasury Dept, IRS To Recognize Same-Sex Marriages For Tax Purposes

The Treasury Department and the IRS will recognize same-sex marriages for tax purposes, even if those couples live in states that don't recognize their union.

Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew said today's ruling provides certainty to all legally married same-sex couples nationwide.  Those couples will be treated as married for all federal tax purposes.

It does not apply to civil unions, domestic partnerships or similar formal relationships.
